No more star power: call to stop casino high-rollers, by Natasha Wallace - The Sydney Morning Herald - 13th January 2010

ANTI-SMOKING groups have called on the State Government to stand up to gambling lobbyists and ban smoking in Star City casino's seven high-roller rooms.

They say the NSW Health Minister, Carmel Tebbutt, should not let Labor's close ties with pubs and clubs - which have donated about $3.7 million to the party since the 2007 election - dictate public health policy.

The NSW Health Minister has granted year-long exemptions to Star City every year since 2004.

Campaigners are fed up with the excuse that Star City will lose high-stakes international gamblers to the other states that allow smoking in high-roller rooms - Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia - and have called for states to set an agreed deadline for a ban.

The chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health, Anne Jones, said: ''They've got to end it. It's gone on too long. They've got to stand up to the casino and the gambling interests.
