Casino Attacks Continue in Australia - Gambling911

Unfortunately more serious casino news out of Australia.

News Limited and wires report the latest in a string of attacks and bashings in and around Australia's land based casinos and gambling dens.

FORMER AFL star Jonathan Hay was attacked and kicked in the face in an apparently random attack at Crown casino.

Hay was celebrating his 30th birthday with friends when a gang of seven thugs forced him to the ground just after 2am Sunday.

The former All-Australian fullback suffered bruising and a cut to the head in the latest episode of mindless CBD violence.

It would appear on the surface that online casinos, online casino portals and the like, are gaining another advantage from their land based cousins by default. Of course online casino don't have actual muggers, however one still needs to watch out for online casino stings and low acts, like they type that were documented on the United States version of 60 Minutes last year.

I would like to see Crown Casino offer an online casino portfolio, perhaps showcased by a Kerry Packer themed game. PartyGaming of course has a Frank Sinatra and The Godfather slot, so why not a Packer game?

PartyGaming's PartyPoker, Noble Poker, and Euro Partners Titan Poker, and a few other brands, are offering satellites to the Poker Cup at Crown Casino later this year beginning in September. Let's just hope the live events are incident free. Insiders are looking to confirm if Mike Sexton, Chris Moneymaker, Daniel "Kid Poker" Negreanu, Annie Duke, Phil Hellmuth, and Tony G are likely to attend. Those individuals may or may not add to aggressive play et al on location. Folks are extremely interested to see if poker Doyle Brunson will turn up, as Mr Brunson has been in a war of words with some of the folks at Party over the past few years, and the word on the street is that Party is interested to talk serious shop with the powers that be at Crown (and Star City). It's got all the makings of a real life battle royal, and a serious mix of personalities. You can bet that Crown's James Packer will have security at an all time high, comparative to when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes stayed at Crown a few months ago.

It's in Crown's best interest to beef up security to protect its customers, visitors and reputation.

Australian Casino News Director Applauds NSW Government

Australian Casino News Applauds NSW Government

Australian Casino News and Media Man Australia founder and director, Greg Tingle, has applauded the decision by the NSW Government to crack down on the unethical actions of a website operator who registered such domain names as Gamblers Anonymous, in an attempt to lure in problem gamblers. The phony Gamblers Anonymous website is said to have redirected website visitors to a number of Australian sports betting companies!

A prominent anti-gambling campaigner was reported as saying (rightly so) "That's like putting Dracula in charge of the blood bank".

The Sydney Morning Herald, Fairfax Media, Gambling Compliance and Gambling911 are amongst those media outlets covering the story.

*Australian Casino News is an igaming arm of media and publicity company, Media Man Australia. In addition, Media Man Australia also owns and operates Casino News Media.

Australian Online Pokies: Goanna Gold, Kangaroo Zoo, Bush Telegraph, Mission: Impossible, and Cleo

Aussie themed slots are some of the most popular on the internet.

Check out these Australian online casino games which you can play for free or play for money.

There's Goanna Gold, Kangaroo Zoo, Bush Telegraph, Mission: Impossible, Cleo (aka Cleopatra) and more. Technically, Bush Telegraph is based on the South African wildlife (but it sure looks Australian), Mission: Impossible stars Hollywood actor Tom Cruise (who has a strong connection to Australia), and Cleopatra is loved by Australians, although it's an Egyptian themed slot game that rose to fame in casinos located along the Las Vegas strip.

Online Poker Warrants to be Unsealed - Gambling911.com

Costigan Media, the parent company of Gambling911.com, has won its case to have warrants unsealed pertaining to the seizure of nearly $40 million in funds from the two biggest online poker companies, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker.

The Honorable Judge Laura Taylor Swain found there was not enough compelling reason to keep the seizure warrants and other court documents sealed. She did, however, allow for the redaction of some information contained within the seizure warrants, specifically names of individuals.

From ruling August 11, 2009 - The Court has considered carefully all of the parties' submissions and arguments and, for reasons stated in the judgement, has granted Costiagan Media motion to intervene and unseals redacted versions of the warrant affidavits and of the submissions that the Government has requested to be filed under seal in connection with this motion practice.

Gambling911.com expected to have a clearer understanding of the extent of these redactions shortly as this story is still developing. It is the first time a New York Circuit Court has ruled in favor of any media outlet requesting that such warrants be unsealed.

The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York instructed three banks - Citibank, Goldwater Bank and Alliance Bank of Arizona - to freeze the accounts of the two online poker rooms. A fourth - Union Bank out of California - was requested to do so on June 24 via a separate seizure warrant signed by a different judge.

In a letter dated Friday and faxed to Alliance Bank, the prosecutor said accounts held by payment processor Allied Systems Inc. are subject to seizure and forfeiture "because they constitute property involved in money laundering transactions and illegal gambling offenses."

The letter was signed by Arlo Devlin-Brown, assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.In another letter faxed the same day, Devlin-Brown asks that the bank treat the funds "as legally seized" by the FBI, saying that the government has probable cause that the gambling payments of U.S. residents had been directed to offshore illegal Internet gambling businesses."

The FBI has authority to seize proceeds of specified unlawful activity without a warrant under exigent circumstances," wrote Devlin-Brown - a process criticized by the Poker Players Alliance. Information contained within the seizure warrants was expected to be released over the next two weeks.

Costigan Media was represented by Baruch Weiss of Arent Fox.

Casino News Media - Casinos, Online Casinos, Media Companies, Newspapers, TV Shows All In Battle For Entertainment Dollar, Traffic And Eyeballs

There is an almighty battle going on at the moment for the entertainment dollar, and web traffic.

As the worlds financial markets remain unsteady, and most experts agree (either on the record, and more recently, off the record) that the global recession is ongoing, companies are looking at various ways to keep the wolf from the door.

Media companies and many brands strive for market share, standing out from the pack, revenue and eyeballs (the amount of traffic, website visitors, audience et al) that they can secure across the internet medium.

In recent times some of the world’s most successful media barons have spoken out on ways the newspapers business, and media business in general, can look to adapt to the times and monetize their web traffic. The long time debate about whether or not enough readers will pay for content (news articles etc), and how much, lingers on.

Rupert Murdoch is looking to offer a News.com.au paid service, as is Fairfax Media aka Fairfax Digital. New York media tsar Mort Zuckerman, recently pointed to the fact that for a number of years various British media companies (newspapers) have been deriving a healthy revenue stream from gaming and igaming, primarily the sports betting sector, and he is suggesting that other media companies may like to adopt the same element into their business models, thus generating sufficient revenue to support their print operations, and of course keep journalists on the payroll.

In the meantime companies such as Casino News Media, and its parent, Media Man Australia, continue to operate in a number of business verticals, thus spreading risk, following some of the principals employed by the famed Virgin Group of Companies who operate in media, communications, travel, lifestyle and gaming, to name but a few.

Other established igaming and gaming brands such as PartyGaming and Bodog keep growing their business and brand portfolios, despite the global recession, and igaming continues to been seen as one of the more go ahead sectors to operate in, as Wall Street and The London Stock Exchange et al continue to add fun and games into what is known universally known as the casino economy.

For these reasons and more, little wonder many of the world’s governments are looking to plug into the gaming sector to increase their revenues with many insiders tipping governments could be bringing in additional billions providing they regulate gaming and igaming correctly. Many eyes remain on California as of this writing with proposed gaming bills being tabled, as California does has a history of both being pro active and an early adopter of new and sometimes ambitious ideas. About the only government that is currently extremely negative towards gaming is Russia, who last month closed down all casinos and gambling houses in the city limits area of Russia, and there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of online Russian Roulette or other online Russian games happening either. Well, they say the exception proves the rule comrade.

Murdoch, Packer, Branson, Ho, Wynn, Gerber, Adelson, Trump.. your throw of the dice.

New York Media Man Mortimer Zuckerman's $200 Million Gamble - 8th July 2009

Media companies such as Costigan Media's Gambling911 and Forbes are reporting the following:

The Daily News publisher is spending a mint to remake the paper. Wait till you hear his plan to save the rest of the industry.

Mortimer Zuckerman is chairman and co-founder of publicly traded Boston Properties, editor in chief of U.S. News and World Report and publisher of the Daily News. A Harvard Law grad, he's a fixture on Sunday talk shows like The McLaughlin Group. Off-air, he's often mid-air: Zuckerman traveled to Tangier in early August to attend events commemorating the 10-year rule of Morroco's King Mohammed VI. Zuckerman, with an estimated net worth of $2.8 billion, spoke to Forbes just after his return.

What kind of shape will newspapers be in when the recession ends, and what else can they do?

A lot of cities are going to exist without newspapers. There is something that can be done, and the federal government ought to do it: allow sports betting on newspaper Web sites. That would save every newspaper in America. The New York Times.com could do it. Plenty of British papers do this; for them it's a crucial part of their net revenue stream. I know a major newspaper in London that makes $15 million a year from sports betting alone.

What would it take for that to happen in the U.S.?

It would take congressional legislation and the willingness on the part of the government to confront gambling and casino interests that have blocked this. Newspaper owners have never gotten together to lobby for this because they have always been quite profitable. Those days are behind us.

Now that the price of newspapers have come down, are you considering acquisitions?

I'm going to focus on the new presses I'm buying.

The New York Times has raised newsstand and delivery prices. Is this something you're considering too?

I really haven't thought about it. It's true that there has traditionally been a price relationship between the Times and the Daily News, with the News costing about 50% of the Times. With what the Times charges now, the Daily News is more like 25% of that. But it's not something I'm considering.

Aussie gambling gossip from the Media Man - 8th August 2009

What a week its been. Australian self confessed pathological gambler, Harry Kakavas "unlucky" streak continues. If anyone could vouch its a casino economy, it would be him. Thus far unsuccessful in his bit to sue Melbourne's Crown Casino. Kakavas company based on the Gold Coast has been giving the corporate doctor. Challenger Managed Investments have appointed John Park and Mark Korda of KordaMentha as receiver managers. Incidental, Part is also looking after the matters for former gaming and IT whiz kid cum tsar, Daniel Tzvetkoff. Yes folks, the higher they climb, the further they fall, especially in the casino circles if these latest turn of events are anything to judge by. In the meantime north of Australia's Gold Coast, up Las Vegas and Atlantic City way Donald Trump is looking to rescue, and no doubt, resurrect, his Trump Casino empire. Trump's peers such as Steve Wynn are said to not want a bar of igaming involvement (bit of a threat to the bricks and mortar Stevo?), while Harrah's Entertainment boss (formally PartyGaming chief), Mitch Garber, is very confident and excited about rolling out at least some of what he knows works for his Harrah's hotel-casino-resort chain. We here at Media Man like this Mitch fella. Sound like he might be open to some b2b and World Casino Directory and multi currency casino listing proposals. Rumours are circulating that some of the Vegas top brass has been observing one Aussie companies b2b dealings with James Packer's long time UK connection - Aspers, including Aspers online ventures. Aspers Damian Aspinall, is finding it impossible to live down his series of high profile dates with Australia's "Body" Elle MacPherson. Speaking of rumoured power couples, or at least, "power pairings" (not to implicate the potentially innocent.. doubt it), Bodog founder Calvin Ayre has been spotted with igaming pr and communications queen, Rebecca Liggero. Ms Liggero is said to have some positive and spicy history with Ayre, and last week our miss was officially placed in a role to help along the Bodog empire rebuild, or global expansion, depending of the sources you care to believe. PartyGaming remains in the party hard - happy days mode at the moment with their CEO Jim Ryan reporting that their PartyCasino.com and PartyPoker.com brands are performing well, and that their recent purchase of Cashcade (including the famed Foxy Bingo) are on track. Party keep teasing rising poker and casino babe, Paris Hilton with public press releases, however our precious Paris is yet to sign the bottom line. Maybe she's waiting on Sexy Poker (banned in Australia) to call. Not to be outdone, Nicki Hilton has been hanging out considerable with our main man, WSOP legend, Doyle Brunson. Hilton's said to have injected some new life into "the father of poker". The Bondi Beach igaming crew are wondering when Holly Branson, daughter of business tycoon, Sir Richard Branson, will one again grace their shows. Sir Richard who also heads up Virgin Games might take a liking to Berg's Gaming on location at the Bondi Icebergs, said to be previous visited by the power pairing, and Paris Hilton of course! Whatever the case, its sure been a hot and eventful few weeks in the casino sector, from court cases, to buyouts, casino babes, not to mention the new poker bill happenings in Washington. CAP, PAP and PPA took no time to publish their spin on things and subsequent press releases, and these developments are strongly rumoured to be on the radar of Australia's Parliament House, including the office of gaming and racing (who have plenty of their own in house problems to contend with). Stay tuned to Gambling911.com for the latest and hottest news from the gambling world, as we scour the universe for the news you need to know.

Gambling man in more strife, by Shannon Willoughby - The Gold Coast Bullentin - 8th August 2009

The man who is suing Melbourne's Crown Casino for $30 million is facing his own financial setback on the Gold Coast.

A company directed by self-confessed pathological gambler Harry Kakavas has moved into the hands of the corporate doctor after it failed to meet its financial commitments.

Elite Property Investments Group Pty Ltd, which owns and runs a commercial property in Broadbeach, is understood to owe its mortgagee millions.

The appointment comes as Mr Kakavas awaits a judge's decision over a legal stoush involving him and Melbourne's Crown Casino.

Mr Kakavas is suing Crown for $30 million plus damages over claims it lured him to the tables, despite knowing he was a banned gambler.

Elite Property Investment's mortgagee, Challenger Managed Investments, appointed John Park and Mark Korda of KordaMentha as receiver managers.

Mr Park said the debt remained confidential but The Bulletin understands it is in the millions.

Mr Kakavas's company paid $9.35 million for the mid-rise on Queensland Avenue in 2005.

Mr Park, who is also the liquidator for a company controlled by embattled IT tycoon Daniel Tzvetkoff, said there was a possibility they could sell the property.

"We are assessing the tenancy mix at the moment and looking at the best strategy for realisation of the property," he said. "We are assessing the quality of the product (before we decide if its going to go to the market)."

The former king of Hedges Avenue -- a name Mr Kakavas was crowned after his prolific buying and selling along 'millionaires row' -- declined to comment.

The judgment over his court case is expected to be handed down within months, with final submissions being heard on August 17.

Mr Kakavas alleges the casino giant seduced him on to the tables knowing he was a self-confessed problem gambler. He is alleging negligence, unconscionable conduct and breaches of the Casino Control Act by Crown Casino.

He claims he banned himself from the casino but said he was lured back with VIP treatment.

The former property developer claims to have turned over more than $1.4 billion during a 14-month gambling binge across Australia from June 2005.

He is also suing the casino's chief operating officer John Williams. Mr Kakavas claims Mr Williams lured him back with VIP treatment.

Mr Kakavas also alleges he was flown about 30 times on Crown's VIP jet in 2007, was regularly handed bags and boxes of cash and given a promise of a 20 per cent rebate on all losses.

Crown Casino boss Rowen Craigie, who also owns property in Hedges Avenue, is also being sued.

Mr Craigie had his Hedges Avenue mansion on the market but it has since been withdrawn. (Credit: News Limited)

Breaking News! Online Poker Bill Introduced in U.S. Senate

New Bill Is Separate from Barney Frank's Similar Online Gambling Bill, with a Higher-Profile Position in the Senate

August 6, 2009 (CAP Newswire) -- New Jersey Democrat Robert Menendez has just introduced into the U.S. Senate a brand new piece of legislation designed to legalize and regulate Internet poker.

"To amend title 31, United States Code, to provide for the licensing by the Secretary of the Treasury of Internet poker and other games that are predominantly of skill, to provide for consumer protections on the Internet, to enforce the tax code, and for other purposes," the bill begins.

The bill would establish a new legal regulatory framework for Internet poker in the United States, and also put in place certain consumer protections such as age restrictions. Officially entitled S.8309, the Internet Poker and Games of Skill Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, it was introduced today.

No matter what success this bill meets with, it represents another huge milestone in the nationwide struggle to reclassify poker from gambling to a game of skill. This movement seeks to enable online poker to be not only legalized but also change the way it is regarded in popular culture.

That movement has gained a lot of transaction over the past year, with smaller court victories in states such as Colorado, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, and with Representative Barney Frank’s recent efforts to legalize and regulate certain sectors of online gambling with his own legislation (which is separate from this bill).

Home to the original U.S. gaming resort destination, Atlantic City, New Jersey has long had its own internal struggles regarding the legality of gaming, and has recently clashed with the federal government on this basis. So it makes sense that the author of this new legislation is is from New Jersey — and a Democrat, the party that is apparently more open to the idea of fully legalized online gambling. (Although it technically has bipartisan support, the vast majority of supporters of Barney Frank’s recent pro-Internet gambling efforts have been Democrats.)

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) not only supports the new bill, but has provided a copy of it at its website. Check it out here. (Credit: CAP)

Greg Tingle comment...

This online poker bill is most welcome news, and has been a long time coming.

Down under in Australia poker and I dare say, online poker, is already a strong part of our popular culture, just as are kangaroos, meat pies and Holden cars, and having a punt on the (horse) races and a bit of a spin on the pokies. By the way, Sportingbet is introducing V8Bet, so punters can be on the V8 Supercar racing, (Holden and Ford).

Some may not like this, and some will, but there's strong rumblings that sports betting might try to significantly ride off the back of this poker bill, as there could be legal arguments that there certainly are elements of skill (knowledge etc) in picking sports bet winners. A similar scenario of sorts with the game known as "Spot The Ball", which has long been a part of British culture, with numerous British newspapers running Spot The Ball competitions. Property listing companies such as Play4Property.com are taking the Spot The Ball game internationally, which isn't that hard to do with the internet as an medium of media, backed up by traditional media, journalism, marketing et al.

Friends, the rules have changed, and will continue to, in regards to online poker, online games of skill, online gambling, and the way business is conducted between people, corporations, media companies et al.

A few apt quotes from some gentlemen with some good ideas and track record of success, getting things done, and changing the world, and the rules of play!

James Packer - "Internet is like electricity"

Rupert Murdoch - "Big will not beat small anymore. It will be the fast beating the slow"

Charles Darwin - "In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed"

My tip, look to California to plug into online poker, online sports betting, and quite likely, online gambling as a whole. They have been pro active and early adopters on other social issues such as the environment, poverty and health.

You can bet that Harrah's Entertainment and their chain of hotel - casino - resorts will be watching this space, as will Macau's Cotai Strip, and even Parliament House down under in Canberra, Australia.

In this space, I'm sure glad to be a journalist, media agent and website portal developer, rather than an owner of a casino or online casino. The online poker and online casino happenings are most certainly extremely newsworthy items to cover. It's of course part of the larger civil liberties and freedom of speech - censorship debate. We should have the right to do what we like in our homes, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. Also remember, sometimes the law is an ass, so just because something is legal or illegal, doesn't mean it is necessarily right or wrong. It just means its (current) law, some of which get changed for the better, some not.

As always, know your limits, bet with your head, not over it. If the gambling, or poker playing stops being enjoyable, its likely time to stop. Have fun, whether poker, pokies, spot the ball, or some other game tickles your fancy.

Gambling - Opening the Search Engine Spigot - 2nd July 2009

It looks as though Congress may soon be voting on the Payments System Protection Act, which partially decriminalizes online gaming. The Act could have massive implications for online gaming and revenues for search engines, as it would allow search engines to sell sponsored listings to gambling companies.

Looking at Hitwise data, I was surprised to see that Gambling websites are already getting a large chunk of their traffic from search engines and some even from paid search listings.

Casino and Poker websites receive a larger share of their traffic from Search Engines than average. In May, Gambling websites received 27.24% of US Internet visits from Search Engines. Hitwise organizes the Gambling parent category into seven sub-categories. I'll focus on Casinos and Poker in this post, leaving aside Bingo, Sports Betting, Lotteries, Directories and Games for the moment. Casinos and Poker websites received 32.19% and 35.62% of visits from Search Engines respectively. This is above the average for All Categories of websites at 26.247%.

Of that search traffic, Casinos received 87.82% of their search traffic from organic listings in the four weeks to June 20th, 2009 and Poker websites 95.22%. To give you a benchmark, the average for All Categories was 92.63% organic and for Shopping & Classifieds 82.56%. Most of the paid traffic terms sending visits to Casino websites were searches for casino resorts, such as Foxwoods and Atlantis. This leaves huge opportunities for search engines to monetize all of that search traffic I mentioned earlier going to gambling websites.

Looking at the search terms sending visits to Gambling websites, one immediately notices the dominance of branded search terms. The top generic, or non-branded query, is "internet casinos" at #110 among search terms sending visits to Gambling websites in the week to 20th June. Next is "free sports picks" at #135, "free casino chip" at #231, "free bingo" at #238 and "free online slots no download" at #246.

In the UK in October, Google lifted a self-imposed ban on gambling related advertising in the UK. This offers an interesting opportunity for cross-market comparison. Comparing paid search traffic to Casinos and Poker websites year over year (i.e. since Google lifted its ban) we find a fairly marked increase in paid traffic. Casinos receive 20% of their search traffic from paid listings in the UK, up more than two-fold year over year. Poker websites receive 8% of their UK search traffic from paid listings, up more than three-fold year over year.

It will be interesting to see if the search engines decide to allow paid listings on gambling content if the Act passes. It will also be interesting to see how marketers respond in the US and whether we'll see intense competition on paid listings for branded terms. This could certainly help boost revenues for the search engines during a downturn. (Credit: Hitwise)

Casino Mogul News Report

Casino News Media

Stanley Ho

Stanley Ho, Macau gambling magnate, is recovering well after undergoing surgery for an unspecified condition.

James Packer

Australian born and breed casino tycoon, James Packer, is encouraging the Australian government to further invest in medical research. Packer is said to be satisfied with his City Of Dreams development in Macau thus far.

Donald Trump

American property and casino mogul, Donald Trump, has issued a press release entitled
Trump Entertainment Resorts Enters Into Agreement to Sell Company; Files Plan of Reorganization. Trump could regain control of Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc, the Atlantic City, New Jersey-based casino operator he founded that is now in its third bout in bankruptcy court.

Trump and BNAC Inc, an affiliate of Beal Bank Nevada, are looking to buy the company for $100 million and take it private, the company said in a statement late on Monday. The deal requires approval from bankruptcy court.

"This plan had the ability to market and use the Trump name so it had a very strong brand attached to it," Trump Chief Executive Mark Juliano said in an interview. "We expect and hope that the plan will be approved or confirmed."

Steve Wynn

The American casino and resort mogul spearheaded the dramatic resurgence and expansion of the Las Vegas Strip in the 1990s. His companies refurbished or built some of the most currently widely recognized resorts in Las Vegas such as the Golden Nugget, The Mirage, Treasure Island, Bellagio, Wynn, and Encore. Mr Wynn has recently publicly let it be known that he apposes the land based casino industry initiatives into the online casino spectrum, which is basically the opposite stance of Harrah's Entertainment, who recruited former PartyGaming CEO, Mitch Garber, to head up their online division.

Greg Tingle

Media Man Australia group of companies founder and owner, Greg Tingle, has recently launched 3 new casino themed website portals. They are Casino Travel Media, Poker News Media and Classic Casino Games.
