Australian Police Lockdown Kings Cross: Gambling, Bikies, Drugs, Porn And Vice Inc, by Greg Tingle - 11th April 2010
Underbelly and vice is alive and well down under in Sydney, Australia.
Media Man and Gambling911 can now report that Kings Cross aka "The Cross" has gone into lockdown mode, as battle for control of business and vice heats up. The new breaks just as Underbelly 3: The Golden Mile, is set to debut tonight on Network Nine Australia.
Australia police including the famed Riot Squad, swarmed 'The Cross' last night in an attempt to head off outlaw bikie gangs preparing to launch a violent challenge to nightclub owner and all round entrepreneur John Ibrahim.
Ibrahim's links to gambling and gaming are loose, preferring more mainstream "vice" such as clubs, bars, alcohol and cigarettes, however let it be noted that clubs in Kings Cross are known as hot spots to secure illegal drugs and a moderate amount of illegal gambling is known to occur in secret. Links to George Freeman, iconic Australian gambling man king pin, and his "family", have also been established, says numerous sources.
Bracing for a bloody turf war, coppers launched the operation over the past two nights and have advised nightclub owners connected to the well known Ibrahim family to "beef up" security.
Just days after Ibrahim left Australia on the eve of Nine Network's launch of the Underbelly, 80 riot police and other forces last night patrolled the Cross on foot, patrol car and "paddy wagon" after receiving intelligence on gangs Bandidos, Comancheros and Notorious.
Police warned the owners of at least six Kings Cross based nightclubs - Trademark, Piano Room, Sapphire, Bada Bing, The Lincoln and The Bank - to prepare for trouble. To help nightclub bouncers identify trouble makers, police have issued owners with leaflets detailing bikie symbols and colours.
A police source notified News Limited: "We have word that the Comancheros and Bandidos have jumped into bed together to take out Notorious this weekend. We believe Notorious is linked with the Ibrahims and they are moving to strike while John (Ibrahim) is out of town."
Police predict that tonight's debut of 'Underbelly' - which is said to glorify the rise of Ibrahim from the suburbs to Cross dominance - could be an X factor in the power play: "There's no doubt that (Underbelly) will have some repercussions."
Riot police stormed one nightspot to avert a showdown recently after Comancheros confronted security at one club linked to the Ibrahims family.
Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli advised the extra riot police were needed to ensure the safety of patrons at Kings Cross. "We want to ensure that everyone has a right to a night out, without having to tolerate antisocial behaviour of any kind."
One Ibrahim insider said "You can feel the tension."
Senior police revealed they have been closely guarding seven associated nightclubs in the Cross: Trademark, Dreamgirls, Eye Bar, Ladylux, the Bank Hotel and Dragonfly, soon to reopen as The Tunnel.
Security staff manning club doors said police had told them "not be a hero" and if they see bikies coming, to "shut the doors because you never know who is chasing them".
A bouncer at one club said the bikie situation was getting worse: "It's all about power and fighting for their territory. It's just stupid."
A local identity, who refused to be named, said his club was approached by police, warning him there could be violence this weekend.
"The police said, 'We are letting you know that John (Ibrahim) is out of town and that if there is anything to do with any gangs or anything like that, call up straight away'," he said.
"Unmarked police cars are sitting outside all the clubs and driving through the Cross ready to act."
Police sources said investigations by 'Operation Eaglehawk', which has been monitoring Kings Cross venues, found tensions between the bikie gangs has been festering.
Bikie gangs have previously got into public brawls at venues such as Star City Casino, Burswood Entertainment Complex, and Crown City Casino, based in Melbourne.
Ibrahim's lawyer, Stephen Alexander, warned media representatives last week that he was the only person authorised to speak for the family, after a "friend" reportedly claimed that the nightclub owner was preparing to battle for his turf.
"He (John) is just not going anywhere; they'll carry him out in a box," the source said.

As far as I am concerned, I am washing my hands with him and moving on.” The ring game begins at 8:00pm local time on Sunday from the Les Ambassadeurs Club in Mayfair, London and will conclude 48 hours later. PartyPoker personality Kara Scott, who is the floor reporter for GSN’s “High Stakes Poker,” will serve in the same capacity in London during the 7:00pm to 7:00am shifts.

In addition, Tony G explained, “I know for a fact that he is soon taking his driving test.” Isildur1 originally accepted the offer to compete in the PartyPoker Big Game IV on March 31st. The mystery Swede is widely believed to be Viktor “blom30” Blom, whose blowup in the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe Main Event was shown during ESPN’s coverage of the tournament. Isildur1 has tangled with several of poker’s high-stakes elite, including Phil Ivey, Tom “durrrr” Dwan, and Brian Hastings.
Among those who haven’t backed out of the PartyPoker Big Game IV is Drag the Bar instructor Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt, who will take to the felts to the tune of “Pass Out” by Tinie Tempah and be joined by fellow American young guns Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo and Isaac Haxton. Others heading to the London casino include Phil Laak, Jennifer Tilly, Neil Channing, David “Viffer” Peat, Roland de Wolfe, Bodo Sbrzesny, James Mitchell, Robert Williamson III, Andrew Feldman, Simon "Schnibl0r" Münz, Roberto Romanello, Andy Greekfish, Barny Boatman, Laurence Grondin, Jake Cody, Sam Trickett, Josh Gould, Richard Wheatley, and Paul Zimbler. In addition, Tony G has brought an “amazing player” with him to London. However, his identity is unknown.

On the TwoPlusTwo online poker forum, posters were outraged over the cancellation. TwoPlusTwo member “inn_Nstruct” frustratingly penned, “What a joke. Lame way to get attention for this show.” Fellow community member “DangerError” added, “It’s all fake. I don’t believe Tony G, even a word.”
Isildur1 sent Tony G a text message simply stating, “Sry for not coming, take care bud.” The seven-word phrase has drawn criticism, with “GaryLQ” explaining, “This text message sounds totally fake to me. 'Take care bud' is a slang British phrase, most commonly used in the Southwest of England. I find it hard to believe it's the sort of language a Swede would use.”
Eddie Hearn, who has been organizing and promoting the PartyPoker Big Game IV for Matchroom Sport, told Poker News Daily on Saturday, "Obviously, it’s disappointing that Isildur1 couldn't join us for the Big Game, but the show must go on. I spoke with him at length on Thursday night and the magnitude of the media interest surrounding his appearance is something he was struggling to come to terms with. It’s a shame, as we would have liked him to be part of the new music walk-ons and evictions that have been introduced to this series. I'm sure you will see him soon though, perhaps at a more low-key event that doesn't reach such a vast global audience."
The news represents the latest twist in the Isildur1 saga, which began after the Swede stormed onto the high-stakes online poker scene on Full Tilt last September. His career peak according to PokerTableRatings.com was $5.0 million, which came in November. Three months later, he was in the hole $2.8 million. Isildur1 has taken $4.5 million off Dwan alone, but lost nearly the same amount to Hastings.

Anti-pokie activists are calling on gaming revenue tax discounts for clubs to be stripped, claiming the "community benefits" provided by clubs are B.S.
Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, the Reverend Tim Costello and activist Paul Bendat are calling for the tax break to be stopped.
Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALH), a J.V between Woolworths (The Fast Food ... er, Fast Cash People) and pokies kingpin Bruce Mathieson, struck business deals seeing 660 plus one armed bandits in up to 10 major venues registered as clubs.
Footy clubs Collingwood, Richmond, Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn football are in on the action (the take).
The current Victorian gaming law states commercial operators of pokies pubs must pay a 33.3% tax on gambling revenue. The 33.3% is a key reason governments won't give up pokies, says detractors.
Clubs on the other hand snatch 8.3% discount on the pokies tax and pay 25% to the State Government (if they can demonstrate a "community benefit"), even including employee pay, operating costs and TV's for patrons.
"This is clearly debatable and I think it's scandalous that the Woolworths joint venture is greedily exploiting pokies club tax breaks and the Victorian Government needs to close this loophole soon," Senator Xenophon stressed.
"This highlights the difficulties with the concept of community benefit is when the money is being made off the backs of problem gamblers.
"The great irony here is that people hooked on the pokies can't even afford to buy the groceries that Woolworths sells."
Costello said governments promoted pokies as good things because of the tax revenue they generated.
"But now we see there is effectively unethical tax avoidance going on," he said.
ALH owns the venues and leases out the pokies area to the clubs. It then charges the sports clubs rent and a "management fee" to operate the machines.
A search of Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation documents shows lion's share of the revenue goes to ALH. Not all the financials show up however.
The business arrangements between the clubs and the ALH are totally legal, but detractors advised they are averting taxes.
Community Benefit Statements do not require a full accounting of all payments.
Monash University gambling expert Prof Charles Livingstone, who has studied the community benefit claims of AFL clubs, said: "Expenses of operating venues, including wages, direct and indirect expenses and fixed assets, amounted to more than 94% ($12.73 million) of the value of community benefits claimed by AFL-operated club venues."
"Clearly charitable or philanthropic expenditures amounted to $462,264, a little more than 3.4 per cent of claims for community benefit".
Pokies activist Paul Bendat is calling on Woolworths' shareholders to question their company's involvement in the gambling industry.
"Woolworths should not be in the pokie business," he said.
"It has nothing to do with their core retail objectives. Woolworths's exploitation of these tax breaks is a disgrace."
The Australian Productivity Commission report into Gambling is due to go into the public domain any day now, however the Government is late again, just as they were with their proposed internet filter, much to the delight of the gaming media and news media who are having a field day take the Rudd - Conroy duo to task on an every increasing frequency.

Readers - punters, entrepreneurs, affiliate marketers, news media and the public and large, in life, as in business, there's what's known in cliche terms as "dirty little secrets".
Now, it shouldn't surprise any of you that both the casino affiliate industry, and the affiliate industry as a whole, has more than a few black marks on its name.
Reporting on the good, the bad and the ugly of the affiliate industry keeps Gambling911 and Media Man pretty busy, but in the tradition of telling it like it is - what you need to know, not necessarily of you want to hear, we report on it, usually in quite a no holds barred, uncensored fashion.
The collapse of the world's financial markets and the subsequent negative domino flow on effects, have left many of the affiliate programs in pretty bad shape.
As in any business vertical, there's only so much room at the top, and only so many can stand head and shoulders above the status quo.
Ok, we know you want know some strong and ethical brand so here goes... PartyGaming - PartyPartners, Virgin Games, Rewards Affiliates, Commission Junction, DGM, LinkShare, Playboy and Penthouse. We understand Bodog is making a nice comeback also. We actually hear a wide variety of reports of CJ, but that's another article in its own for a future date.
Now, let's swing into the real hard news stuff...
Enormous changes are happening in the industry. Companies are announcing mergers, putting themselves out there to be sold, and many are closing up. There is a little dirty secret that is only being talked about behind closed doors in the industry and folks need to pay attention.
Over the past few years a number of companies came from nowhere to enjoy prominent and million dollar profits, some only to collapse and disappear without trace. As you may suspect, often affiliate markets get caught out and left short changed, and of course the industry continues on, albeit it with a further tarnished name. Backend "flogs" were just one of the dodgy tactics some the affiliate programs employed. Black Hat techniques are still riff, and as you would expect, crims do their best to keep cloak and dagger tactics out of the public view.
Eventually the FTC and the credit card merchant companies caught up withe bad apples, affiliates walked, negative buzz kicked in and many went MIA. E-mails were not returned, phones rang out or were disconnected, and you get the idea.
PR spin jobs - press releases built on B.S keep coming out of various firms, but readers, be skeptical. How valuable is your time and reputation, and if your already satisfied with some solid brands you enjoy strong track record with, why would you change and upset the applecart?
No one knows for sure what doing to happen in the coming weeks and months, but true to the law of the jungle, only the strong will survive.
Be aware of questionable press releases like "Deal Worth $100 million dollars", unless its from a giant like a Virgin, PartyGaming, Playtech or Betfair... we know you get the gist of it.
Make no mistake, many affiliate groups and networks are loaded up with debt and are looking to escape the chaos.
This isn't a FUD (Fear, Uncertainly and Doubt) article for the hell of it, its here because its real, and if your note sure, do a retake on the industry body count over the past few years.
We predict more regulation of the industry, both in affiliate programs across the board, and most certainly in the casino and igaming affiliate sector, as the U.S, European and Australian governments will be looking for their slice of the action.

Reporting on the good, the bad and the ugly of the affiliate industry keeps Gambling911 and Media Man pretty busy, but in the tradition of telling it like it is - what you need to know, not necessarily of you want to hear, we report on it, usually in quite a no holds barred, uncensored fashion.
The collapse of the world's financial markets and the subsequent negative domino flow on effects, have left many of the affiliate programs in pretty bad shape.
As in any business vertical, there's only so much room at the top, and only so many can stand head and shoulders above the status quo.
Ok, we know you want know some strong and ethical brand so here goes... PartyGaming - PartyPartners, Virgin Games, Rewards Affiliates, Commission Junction, DGM, LinkShare, Playboy and Penthouse. We understand Bodog is making a nice comeback also. We actually hear a wide variety of reports of CJ, but that's another article in its own for a future date.
Now, let's swing into the real hard news stuff...
Enormous changes are happening in the industry. Companies are announcing mergers, putting themselves out there to be sold, and many are closing up. There is a little dirty secret that is only being talked about behind closed doors in the industry and folks need to pay attention.
Over the past few years a number of companies came from nowhere to enjoy prominent and million dollar profits, some only to collapse and disappear without trace. As you may suspect, often affiliate markets get caught out and left short changed, and of course the industry continues on, albeit it with a further tarnished name. Backend "flogs" were just one of the dodgy tactics some the affiliate programs employed. Black Hat techniques are still riff, and as you would expect, crims do their best to keep cloak and dagger tactics out of the public view.
Eventually the FTC and the credit card merchant companies caught up withe bad apples, affiliates walked, negative buzz kicked in and many went MIA. E-mails were not returned, phones rang out or were disconnected, and you get the idea.
PR spin jobs - press releases built on B.S keep coming out of various firms, but readers, be skeptical. How valuable is your time and reputation, and if your already satisfied with some solid brands you enjoy strong track record with, why would you change and upset the applecart?
No one knows for sure what doing to happen in the coming weeks and months, but true to the law of the jungle, only the strong will survive.
Be aware of questionable press releases like "Deal Worth $100 million dollars", unless its from a giant like a Virgin, PartyGaming, Playtech or Betfair... we know you get the gist of it.
Make no mistake, many affiliate groups and networks are loaded up with debt and are looking to escape the chaos.
This isn't a FUD (Fear, Uncertainly and Doubt) article for the hell of it, its here because its real, and if your note sure, do a retake on the industry body count over the past few years.
We predict more regulation of the industry, both in affiliate programs across the board, and most certainly in the casino and igaming affiliate sector, as the U.S, European and Australian governments will be looking for their slice of the action.

UFC legal battles: You win some, scare some and fight on - 9th April 2010
You think it takes a big staff to manage all these events the UFC is putting on around the world? Imagine the legal team is takes to manage everything that happens away from the Octagon. The promotion is going after internet pay-per-view pirates, waging contractual battles against former fighters, fending off attacks from bloggers and even the Fertittas are battling fellow millionaires in Las Vegas.
The UFC just won some cash from its case against former star Ken Shamrock.
Earlier in the year, Shamrock had unsuccessfully brought suit against Zuffa challenging various provisions of his UFC contract during a two day trial before Judge Johnson. As a result of today’s decision, Shamrock was ordered to pay Zuffa nearly $175,000 in related attorney fees, costs and expenses.
Zuffa was once again represented by Las Vegas lawyers Donald J. Campbell and J. Colby Williams whose legal efforts during the trial were characterized by Judge Johnson as “stellar.” When asked to comment on today’s ruling by Judge Johnson, Messrs. Campbell & Williams remarked as follows:
“This latest legal victory on behalf of Zuffa demonstrates, once again, that the UFC is fully committed to vigorously enforcing all of its contractual rights. Judge Johnson has determined Mr. Shamrock’s hard lesson learned in this case will cost him approximately $175,000.”
The promotion is also embroiled in a battle between the Fertittas and Greenspuns in Las Vegas. Two of the most powerful families in Sin city are joint owners of Green Valley Ranch Casino. The Greenspuns' gaming group, GCR claims that the Fertittas' Stations used UFC tickets to lure big players from partially owned GVR to the fully owned Red Rock Casino.
Station Casinos said in a statement Thursday evening that "we are extremely disappointed the Greenspuns have joined the fray of out-of-the-money constituents seeking to bring meritless lawsuits in connection with our bankruptcy proceedings."
Station Casinos said the "threatened lawsuit is nothing more than a desperate attempt and improper attempt by the Greenspuns to gain leverage against Station in our ongoing restructuring discussions with Green Valley Ranch's creditors. We intend to vigorously contest the Greenspuns' baseless claims."
Also involved in this legal stew is Greenspun's Las Vegas Sun. The Sun provides MMA coverage second to none nationally when it comes to newspapers, but one can only assume Stations and the UFC won't be dropping a boat load of advertising money The Sun's way until this lawsuit is settled.
While the outcome of that battle is in doubt. Dana White's scored a quick knockout against TheDirty.com. Nik Richie posted a story alleging he had a source at the Bellagio in Las Vegas who claimed that White was over $1 million in the hole because of gambling losses he owed the casino. Apparently, a cease and desist was sent and the posting quickly disappeared.
